Top tips for preparing for Clearing

  1. Consider every outcome. Keep your options open by looking at alternative courses and subjects that are related to your original plans. This will help you to increase your chances of securing a place at university. Remember that similar courses may have different names at other universities. Look at university websites to check entry requirements. Some courses may require specific subjects at A-level and GCSE (or your region’s equivalent). You can check entry requirements for our courses using Course Search
  2. Take your time. We recommend that you prepare ahead of results day so you know your options in advance. Selecting a university is a big decision. Use the time before you receive your results to research your options and reduce pressure on the day. Consider making a shortlist of the courses and institutions you’re interested in. This means you can quickly find the right course for you when vacancies are published.
  3. Check your contact details. Make sure your contact details are correct in UCAS in case you need to be contacted. We recommend using your personal email rather than your school email address, in case your school access is restricted. If you want someone to talk to universities on your behalf, you’II need to add them as your nominated contact on UCAS.
  4. Be available to discuss your options. Make sure you’re available on results day to talk to universities and teachers. Plan what you want to say beforehand. Think about why you’re interested in a particular course or university, and what you have to offer. Have a notepad and pen handy so you can write down any important information.
  5. Think about finance. It can take time to process an application for student finance, so it’s better to apply sooner rather than later. You can always amend or cancel your application if your plans change. Check information about how to apply for student finance
  6. Register for Clearing updates. If you want to prepare for Clearing but don’t have your results yet you can register for Clearing updates. This will let you know when our vacancy listings are live.
