Why did you choose the University of Leeds?

“I chose the University of Leeds because of its prestigious reputation as a member of the Russell Group, known for its excellence in research and teaching. The university's position in the top 100 global rankings was a significant factor, reflecting its commitment to high academic standards and international recognition.

Specifically, the Engineering Management course offered a comprehensive and well-structured curriculum, with a range of modules that perfectly aligned with my career aspirations. The blend of engineering principles and management practices provided a unique interdisciplinary approach which further helped me define my career aspirations down the line.”

What was your experience of studying online with Leeds?

“I found studying online really convenient as it was quite flexible to manage alongside my full-time role. It also presented an opportunity to learn alongside an international cohort diverse in experience and perspectives.

“I found the course materials very up to date and covering challenges of both present and future.

“The weekly catchups and breakout groups with the instructors and my cohort was very useful to clear doubts, discuss concepts learned, and improve critical thinking.

“The discussion forum was one of my favourite features of the online course as it encouraged us to actively apply concepts being learned, observe diverse practical takes from the cohort, and interact in healthy debates.”

Was there anything that surprised you about the course?

“I was surprised by the age group in my cohort. I had the opportunity to discuss, debate, and learn from a cohort that included professionals at varying career stages, from junior engineers to directors.

“I was also pleasantly surprised by the number of practical case studies on leading multinationals and interviews with leadership figures in these organisations, which was a great addition to visualising the real world application of the concepts learned.”

What challenges did you face?

“I faced mainly three challenges: getting used to studying completely online coming from a classroom experience, getting used to critical thinking and referencing systems critical to the assignments, and finally managing a full-time role alongside the demands of learning and assignments.

“But I was able to overcome these due to the extensive support provided by the online learning platform in getting used to navigating it, support by my personal mentor and instructors in practicing critical thinking and referencing correctly, and the organised and structured nature of the programme.”

What have you been doing since finishing your course?

“Since finishing my studies I have gone on to do a full time Masters in Business Analytics and Big Data and currently work as an Innovation Analyst.

“I see the course I did at Leeds as the origin point for my current position as it introduced me to the subject of business analytics and concepts of decision making. This helped me discover an interest and a career path that I would not have discovered if not for my post graduate certificate at Leeds.

“My experience of utilising critical thinking, referencing and learning under a UK higher education programme helped to excel further in my masters.”

What experiences at Leeds do you think particularly helped with your career?

“The opportunity to learn with a cohort of individuals with varying ranges of experience and backgrounds has been great in expanding my critical thinking and perspective. It has helped me to always consider a number of viewpoints before making decisions.

“The strong industry led programme design has also helped immensely solidify my understanding of concepts and knowledge of best practices.”

What advice would you offer to other students?

“I would advise anyone interested in pursuing postgraduate education to be really sure about the subject they pursue — research and ensure the modules in the programme are of interest to you, and never shy away in asking questions. Questions never asked are opportunities to excel missed.”
