As a child Pragya Sharma constantly talked about visiting other countries.
Now she has become the first in her family to study abroad having secured an India Anniversary Masters Scholarship and a place at the University of Leeds.
Pragya, who is originally from Delhi, India, plans to use her skills and experience in a strategic marketing role upon completion of her Masters.
Leeds has 500 International Excellence Scholarships available to study a taught Masters course starting in 2025, with a 50% fee reduction available for international students.
Having completed an undergraduate degree in Journalism and Mass Communication and honed her skills in media, storytelling and strategic communication, Pragya spent time working at a social media marketing agency in India.
After three years in employment, she was ready to take her learning to the next level and enhance her job opportunities by moving to the UK to study a Masters in International Marketing Management.
Through the award of a scholarship, Pragya received a significant contribution towards her tuition fees.
Pragya picked Leeds because of its globally recognised curriculum and immersive, well-rounded student experience.
“I wanted more than just a degree. I wanted an experience and a new perspective on life – personal and professional growth,” said Pragya.
Leeds is such a vibrant, engaging environment. I value having real world challenges to solve and seeing how they are applied in real life.
“When I was applying, my dad mentioned that I was the first in my family to study abroad. They are excited and want to hear everything about my studies,” Pragya said.
She urges Indian students thinking of studying in the UK to “take the leap”.
“Speak to people. Evaluate your priorities. It is competitive and it is a big investment but if it aligns with your goals there are so many opportunities to explore by studying in the UK.
“It builds your confidence. You get to test yourself in situations that you aren’t necessarily comfortable in.
“Be open to all experiences. There are so many resources to help you get settled.”
University of Leeds students are able to access a wide range of career advancement support, which includes employment fairs, job application workshops and internships.
Pragya is preparing for an international study tour to Milan in 2025, adding another global dimension to the learning experience.
Pragya calls Leeds her “second home” with a “welcoming and engaging atmosphere”. During time off from her studies, she enjoys weekend strolls and shopping.
As a Link to Leeds ambassador, Pragya is part of a team of students who provide online advice and support to prospective international students.
