I volunteer for the University of Leeds with Ruth Gorse Academy, and I have been volunteering for two years now with them.
I am a volunteer with their volleyball club, where I have had the opportunity to coach students at the school with their volleyball playing skills. The role includes preparing drills, demonstrating skills, and overall assisting with games and techniques.
Volunteering for personal development
I volunteer because it is an excellent way to channel my passion for helping others. I am helping students with the growth and development of their volleyball skills so that they can play confidently.
I think that volunteering at Ruth Gorse Academy has benefitted my personal development because it has helped me improve my leadership skills, and confidence in decision making.
The experience has been an integral part of my time at the University of Leeds and has exceeded my expectations.
I have had the privilege of meeting new students, teachers and coaches which have all allowed me to expand my knowledge and improve my mindset.
New environments and experiences
My favourite part of the volunteering experience is meeting new students and working with the other coaches, to achieve the common goal of making volleyball fun and interactive, while giving students the encouragement and support to excel in the sport.
Volunteering is a good way to stay active throughout your university experience. It allows you to contribute to your community by giving back in any way you can, and gives you an opportunity to grow and experience new environments while strengthening your own personal growth and skills.
Advice for future volunteers
Volunteering has been a big part of my experience at university, and I think other than giving back to your community, it is an excellent way to participate in an extracurricular activity.
With volunteering, you will learn a lot about yourself.
You can also strengthen your leadership, motivational, and decision-making capabilities confidently. Balancing university and other commitments while volunteering has been very doable, as the coordinators are friendly, encouraging, and flexible with student schedules.
There is tremendous support available from University of Leeds staff and volunteer coordinators for any concerns that one may have.
