General English course Teaching and assessment
Find out about how our 2023 General English course will be taught and assessed.
Teaching
Our teaching is informed by research into teaching languages, which means our teaching methods help you get the most out of your learning.
Classes
Classes are scheduled during Monday to Friday between 9am and 4pm for full-time students, and between 9am and 1pm for part-time students.
Teaching takes place on campus and a typical class size is between 14 and 16 students per class.
Timetable
As a general guide, if you’re studying a full-time course you’ll have a General English class in the morning and a General English Plus class or Independent study in the afternoon. If you’ll be studying part-time, you'll only study in the mornings.
You'll receive your timetable during the first week of your course.
Assessment
You'll be assessed at the end of each General English unit to encourage you to use what you have learnt, track your progress and identify areas for you to improve on.
Types of assessment
Assessments vary across units; examples of previous assessments have been creating a blog, taking part in discussions, making a vlog (video blog), evaluating news articles, doing a presentation and producing pieces of creative writing.
Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR)
You'll receive grades, detailed feedback and a CEFR Level for your work. The CEFR is an internationally recognised grading system of measuring your language ability.
