Professor Shearer West CBE has taken up the role of Vice-Chancellor and President of the University of Leeds.

She joins Leeds after seven years as Vice-Chancellor at the University of Nottingham.

Professor West said she was excited about joining such a globally diverse, inclusive and inspiring institution.

"This is a place where academic excellence, innovation and a truly global community come together to make a lasting impact on the world,” she said.

“One of the most inspiring aspects of the University of Leeds is the diversity and inclusivity of our community. With more than 38,000 students from 170 countries, we bring perspectives from across the globe.

“I look forward to being part of this vibrant environment where collaboration flourishes, and new ideas take shape.”

The University, said Professor West, has a strong reputation for academic excellence and groundbreaking research, and is ranked among the top universities in the UK and worldwide, delivering high-quality teaching across a broad range of disciplines.

“I am especially motivated by working alongside colleagues who are not only dedicated to their fields but are also committed to helping students think critically, creatively, and independently.”

And while Leeds’ global research is making significant strides in addressing some of the world’s greatest challenges, it also fosters a culture of innovation, enterprise and partnership within the UK, she said.

“Leeds has a strong record of turning knowledge into action, enabling students, researchers and staff to bring their ideas to life.

“I am a passionate advocate for the role of universities in their regions, creating jobs, attracting investment, and working with civic and political leaders to build the future.”

Leeds’ Interim Vice-Chancellor and President for the past year, Professor Hai-Sui Yu, has reverted to his  former role as Provost and Deputy Vice-Chancellor.

In his interim role, Professor Yu led a programme to improve the University’s approach and performance with a focus on excellence in research, student education, staff engagement, and strategic change.

Professor West said: “I know that I am building on firm foundations and want to thank Professor Hai-Sui Yu for his excellent stewardship of the University this past year. I look forward to working with him very closely as I become part of this incredible community.”
