
More subjects at the University of Leeds have been ranked in the top 100 globally by an influential international league table.
A total of 31 subjects are in the latest QS World University Rankings by Subject’s top 100 – up from 27 last year and with 12 ranked in the top 50.
The University’s top-rated subjects are Geophysics (14th globally), Geology (15), Earth Sciences (20), Development Studies (22) and Petroleum Engineering (=22).
Improved rankings have also been acknowledged for four of the five broad subject areas of Engineering & Technology, Life Science & Medicine, Natural Sciences, and Social Sciences & Management. Art and Humanities remains the University’s top-ranked broad subject area, at 54th in the world.
This year, five subjects have moved into the top 100: Medicine, Politics & International Studies, Theology, Divinity & Religious Studies, Statistics & Operational Research, and Hospitality & Leisure Management.
The 2025 edition of the respected QS World University Rankings by Subject features 55 individual subjects across five broad subject areas, analysing 5,203 higher education institutions. At Leeds, 48 subjects are ranked, of which almost two thirds are in the top 100 globally.
Evaluation by QS is based on a range of measures, including academic and employer reputation, the research and quality of institutions' published research, and universities' global engagement as demonstrated by research partnerships and co-authored publications.
In the QS World University Rankings, Leeds is currently ranked 82nd globally – the University’s second highest position in the QS rankings’ 20-year history.
