Computer science student Andy Zhang is targeting a career in the burgeoning AI industry after receiving a scholarship to study at the University of Leeds.
Andy, from Beijing, first arrived to study an undergraduate degree with integrated International Foundation Year. This provided the perfect platform for life in the UK and his sights are now set on a Masters.
Leeds has 500 International Excellence Scholarships available for students applying to study a taught Masters course starting in 2025, with a 50% fee reduction available for international students.
Andy recognises that developments in computer science are radically changing the way that we interact, process data and make decisions. With AI knowledge in demand across industry sectors, the University of Leeds is building a strong reputation in this area.
“Learning about AI is important. This area is moving very fast and could present good opportunities,” said Andy. “But I am also interested in working in academia as I enjoy research that solves problems using software.”
Andy is enjoying life in Leeds. He initially found the language challenging but, with support from the University’s Language Zone, his English has improved to a high standard.
“I received my first offer from Leeds and was happy to accept it,” said Andy.
“The University offers a lot of help to international students. People have been very welcoming and always respond to my enquiries quickly. Leeds has a good reputation and the teaching quality is very high.”
He lives in private shared accommodation, within walking distance of the University, and made new friends through the Leeds University Union Computing Society (CompSoc).
I like Leeds, I like its culture. The city is safe and I have found it inexpensive to live compared to other places.
“Leeds is very small compared to Beijing but I like the community. I enjoy my lifestyle here and feel I could build a career in the UK,” Andy said.
Andy gained invaluable experience through a summer internship in the University’s Sir William Henry Bragg building. “The experience of working and studying here with people from different cultures has strongly enhanced my views and thinking. This will enhance my opportunities wherever I go in the world,” he added.
“If you apply yourself as a student you have a very good opportunity to achieve success after graduation and move on to further studies. This will be career enhancing for me.”
As a Link to Leeds ambassador, Andy is part of a team of students who provide online advice and support to international students.
