I’m originally from Tanta, a small city in Egypt. I lived in several countries to study and work before moving to the UK in December 2022.
I am a lecturer in Engineering Management and the Programme Lead of the online Engineering Management MSc.
I am a civil engineer by profession and worked in different roles in the industry before moving into academia.
One of my interesting roles was as a Construction Manager from the client side to deliver a project where I was responsible for structural design.
This gave me great insight into how my designs can be translated, and how the coordination between on-site engineering designs ensures that engineering assets are delivered to the highest standard.
During my three years working on-site in that role, I did a part-time Masters in Construction Engineering and Management. By the end of this degree I realised that I enjoy conducting research to solve real-life industry problems, which inspired me to move to academia and complete a PhD at the University of Auckland in New Zealand.
I taught during my four-year PhD, which I thoroughly enjoyed and became very good at. I was then offered a full-time job as a Teaching Fellow at the University of Auckland to teach engineering management, which evolved to leading their Engineering Project Management Msc.
I came to the University of Leeds as it gave me more scope to conduct research in my field and lead the Engineering Management MSc, whilst teaching and supervising students in this degree programme.
The Engineering Management MSc incorporates management science into engineering applications. Its learning materials cover a broad range of managerial concepts in a bespoke way for engineers to understand and interact with these concepts in their daily tasks.
The course is designed to serve engineers at different stages in their careers, especially those who want to shift to managerial positions and obtain technical skills and experiences that make their work more successful.
Students will learn the principles and practices of engineering management including business management, innovation and entrepreneurship, leadership and organisational behaviour, technology management, project management, safety science, decision-making, and supply chains.
I expect students to develop into world-class engineering leaders that act with integrity and accountability, whilst positively contributing to their societies and adding value to their organisations.
The research projects are the most rewarding part of the Engineering Management MSc. Students can consolidate their learning from the course by working independently on a project of their choice, which provides them with practical experience, project management skills, research skills, networking opportunities, and personal development.
It can also be considered a taster for students who aspire to pursue further studies at PhD level.
