How online teaching works at Leeds

Our teaching and learning approach ensures you receive a flexible online education that enhances your knowledge and strengthens your career.

Our postgraduate courses are shaped by research-led academic expertise and the best approaches in online learning for that subject.

If you have any questions we’ll be on hand to support you through the decision-making and onboarding stages.

Our teaching methods

Online Masters and postgraduate courses with the University of Leeds include:

  • regular engagement with Leeds academics in webinars and discussion forums,
  • eight-week module blocks to support flexible learning around other commitments,
  • assessment information provided at the start of the course so you can plan your time,
  • engaging learning activities directly relevant to professional development, supported with online textbooks, academic journal articles, industry expert videos and opportunities to collaborate with others,
  • formative assessment to provide ongoing feedback and check your understanding,
  • discussion forums for you to engage with other learners from around the world,
  • assessments consisting of coursework, projects, presentations, quizzes and exercises. There are no monitored exams.

The discussion forum was one of my favourite features of the online course as it encouraged us to actively apply concepts being learned, observe diverse practical takes from the cohort, and interact in healthy debates.

Study hours

Our modules are typically planned for 10 guided learning hours and 10 independent study hours per week.

Courses are structured so that you can take breaks between modules if needed.

Studying online meant I was able to work at my own pace, at a time of day that was most convenient for me.

Support from our dedicated admissions and enrolment team

Our dedicated Admissions and Enrolment Team is on hand to answer queries about our courses and how to apply.

They can advise you on:

Onboarding support

Once you accept your offer to study, you’ll receive welcome information including:

  • how to access your University of Leeds IT account,
  • how to access the learning platform you’ll be using for your studies,
  • how to pay your tuition fees,
  • how to register as a student and enrol for your modules.

Our bespoke induction course will provide key information and opportunities to meet your peers and the academic and support teams for your programme.

All new students are encouraged to engage with the induction course to get a feel for the learning platform, understand how things work on a University of Leeds online postgraduate programme, and learn about useful resources available to you during your studies.

Once you start your first module, the concise, flexible course structure will guide you through your programme and you can return to the induction course for information at any point.

At Leeds we pride ourselves on the support we offer our students, and we’ll help you to thrive throughout your online studies.
